During this recent maternity session, I was so impressed with this couple. It seemed to me that they really “got it”. What the heck am I talking about? I think that many times when a couple has a new baby, they often look back and regret not taking advantage of that last bit of time when it is just the two of them. When your family goes from 2 to 3, everything changes. It’s easy to want to lay on separate couches, to be too tired to pay attention to each other, to be too busy to go on a date.
But these two were in their own bubble during our shoot. I was an outsider looking in on their incredible bond and obvious love for one another. I gave no direction because they were so natural and made each other smile and laugh at all the perfect times. It seems impossible they could love each other more. Or love anyone else as much. But as their due date is right around the corner, I know it’s not impossible. I know it’s going to happen. And I can’t wait to capture some of their first moments with their little one . . .
It’s pretty common that as the years pack on to a marriage – as the family expands, as our small homes are left and new homes are bought – the relationship between husband and wife gets put on the back burner. What I love about this couple is that it’s right there for all to see. As we were shooting this session, someone walking by asked if it was engagement photos. They just laughed and said, “No, we’ve been married for 7 years!” Seven years might not be long compared to some, but today it’s quite a feat. And if you think back to that time right after you got engaged (for those of you married) and how mushy, contagiously in love you were with each other. That is what this stranger was seeing. And I thought it was amazing. And inspiring. And a great reminder that it would really do everyone some good to just go home and plant a big fat one on their spouse, as if they were just engaged.
