March 1st has almost become my own “New Years Day”. The old saying of “in like a lion, out like a lamb” rings true to my history with March. It’s always been a month of happenings for me, good and bad. In 1998, my house burned down on March 12. In 2009, my Henry was stillborn on March 26, and just last year, we welcomed Bubba with tears and laughter on March 9. Whether the March lion is roaring out news of tragedy or blessings, it is a roar I stop and listen to.

With each “roar” I see it as a chance to start new again. A fresh beginning to the year. Fire might destroy everything, but from the ashes create an opportunity to bring a family and community closer together. The loss of a baby brings darkness, but when you can look closer, there is new light – a stronger bond between mother and father, a realization of a dream. And there is nothing more significantly tied to the idea of “new” like new life. March is always my fresh start indeed.
